3 Women’s Suffrage Movement
8.49 Analyze the women’s suffrage movement and its major proponents, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony and examine excerpts from the writings of Stanton, Anthony and Sojourner Truth.

4 Connecting the Dots… As the American System began to promote the movement of people and goods from the east to the west, ideas began to spread around the United States as well. Many people began to demand for social injustices to be answered. One of the most prominent groups was the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

5 What is Suffrage… Suffrage means the right to vote, especially in a political election. Women’s Suffrage therefore meant that women desired to have the right to vote. Women believed that they should have this right because they were citizens of the United States who were having one of the basic rights denied to them. The three main leaders we are discussing are Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Stanton.

6 Sojourner Truth… Sojourner Truth was an African American Woman who had escaped slavery. In her speeches she put an emphasis not only on the injustices she experienced because she was a woman, but also because she was an African American. Listen and follow along to her famous speech “Ain’t I A Woman”.

7 Excerpt Time… Susan B. Anthony Elizabeth Stanton
Answer the questions in the guide over the excerpt from Susan B. Anthony. Answer the questions in the guide over the excerpt from Elizabeth Stanton.

8 How does this video capture the Women’s Suffrage Movement?

9 Reflection How did the Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony give evidence to justify why they should have the right to vote? Why do you believe how they justified having the right to vote was well designed in explaining their cause? Can you think of another group that may use this form of evidence to support gaining equal rights or freedoms?
