1 The integrated units of the Titanic/Middle Ages
Agenda – March 29, 2017 The integrated units of the Titanic/Middle Ages Objectives: Describe the difference between traditional and modern methods of teaching. Explain how students become interested in learning units related to academic subjects such as ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Art class. Discuss the integrated units of the Titanic/MiddleAges.

2 The difference between traditional and modern academic performance in the classroom:
a. Teacher centered b. Student work on tasks without discussing perspectives. c. Students traditionally read and write the answers on worksheets/handouts and using textbooks Modern: a. Student centered b. After students read, they can discuss their perspectives and expressing their opinions. c. Students can use various sources including internet for their projects.

3 How do students become involved in learning more about units/themes in class?
Teachers first need to explain background information about units/themes. Students are able to choose activities: Examples of the Middle Ages activities in a tic-tac-toe design a. Flash Cards – Terms b. Handouts – My personal activity c. Create a menu – foods and drinks d. Castles at war activity e. Read the article about Black Death f. Working in the Castle activity g. Mapping castles task h. Jousting on the Internet – ASL Story i. Use Venn diagram – the similarities and differences between medieval and modern times

4 The Titanic

5 Titanic Unit Can the Titanic unit apply to ELA (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies? Yes or No 1. Make a timeline to show the actual order that the lifeboats were launched. 2. Why did Sir Alfred Chambers think that more people would have been saved if Titanic had fewer lifeboats? 3. What reasons can you find to explain why passengers did not rush to fill the lifeboats? 4. Do you think that the White Star Line was responsible for the lifeboats not being filled? (give reasons) 5. Do you think that Captain Smith was responsible for the lifeboats not being filled? (give reasons)

6 Titanic’s Lifeboats Fact
At the British Inquiry into the Titanic disaster Sir Alfred Chambers of the Board of Trade was asked why regulations governing the number of lifeboats required on passenger ships had not been updated since Sir Alfred stated that he felt there were too many lifeboats. He said that if there had been fewer lifeboats there would have been more of a rush to fill them and so they would have left full and consequently more people would have been saved. Titanic carried 20 lifeboats – enough for 1178 people. The existing Board of Trade required a passenger ship to provide lifeboat capacity for 1060 people. Titanic’s lifeboats were situated on the top deck. The boat was designed to carry 32 lifeboats but this number was reduced to 20 because it was felt that the deck would be too cluttered. Titanic also carried 3500 lifebelts and 48 life rings. – Useless in the icy water. Many people were confused about where they should go after the order to launch the lifeboats had been given. There should have been a lifeboat drill on 14th April, but the Captain cancelled it to allow people to go to church. At the investigation that followed, those responsible for loading the lifeboats argued that the lifeboats did not look strong enough to carry 65 people. However, the lifeboats had been tested in Belfast on 25th March 1912 with 70 men being carried in each. Collapsible boat B floated into the sea upside down. As many as 30 men stood on the upturned hull until rescued. People did not believe that the Titanic was sinking. Many thought it was a drill and stayed inside rather than wait on the icy boat deck.

12 Social Studies/ELA: Primary & Secondary Sources
October 1910, the New York Times published a review of the Olympic, Titanic’s sister ship, which ended with the words "In short, so complete will be the system of safeguarding devices on board this latest of ocean giants that, when she is finally ready for service, it is claimed that she will be practically unsinkable and absolutely unburnable."

14 Wrapping Up Students would succeed in learning the units/themes through multidisciplinary and integrated activities and be provided options and to select those that interest them.
