During the Progressive era, what were some similarities between the women’s suffrage movement and the movement for African American equality?

2 levels of Progressivism:
Social reformer: wanted to take a practical approach to improving the human condition, i.e. moderate suffragists like Carrie C. Catt and minority activists that would support Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta Compromise. Other examples? Social Controller: wanted to impose middle class standards on the poor and eliminate perceived causes to society’s problems, i.e. The Anti-Saloon League and immigration restrictions. Other examples?

2 levels cont’d… The social reformers were usually more moderate, whereas the social controllers were usually more radical. How do you think social controllers used anti-immigrant sentiment to their advantage?

End result: Progressive reform evolved into Progressive control, usually as a way to repress the poor and underprivileged. For more on this idea, see story of Jack Johnson on pg 604. EXTRA CREDIT: Watch the film, “Unforgivable Blackness, The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson”. Write a 1 page response about how this story reflects the ideas covered in todays class.
