2 Origins Inspired by Gothic architecture: irregularly placed towers, high ceilings, and gargoyles

3 Romantic movement – backlash from Age of Reason: authors could now follow their imagination. For Gothics, they followed it to the shadowy region where the fantastic, demonic, and insane reside.

4 Setting Weird – went beyond normal, typical, every day settings to the bizarre Often dark, medieval castles or decaying ancient estates

5 Plots Macabre: gruesome, grisly, horrid
People placed in extreme situations to reveal their true nature (murder, live burials, torture, and retribution from the grave) Peered into the darkness of the supernatural

6 Purpose To explore the human mind in extreme situations and thus arrive at some truth To examine the human heart under various conditions: fear, greed, vanity, mistrust, and betrayal. Basically, to show off/explore the dark side of human nature
