We have a President with the Federalist Party and a Vice President that is with the Democratic-Republican Party The President and Vice President are from opposing parties! That’s Awkward!!!

Passed in 1804 to fix this problem Established that the President and the Vice President should be voted on separately

Primary Problem: The French
Jay’s Treaty- passed in 1794 established peace and trade between Britain and United States Treaty greatly angered the French and Democratic-Republicans D-R’s feared it favored aristocracy and Federalists As a result, the French began attacking American ships

XYZ Affair In an attempt to negotiate with the French, Adams sends US diplomats Charles Pickney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. Three French officials meet with US diplomats and ask for bribes in order to negotiate peace. In the US, the 3 French officials were known as X, Y, and Z. Americans felt incredibly insulted

Quasi-War As a result, the French and US engaged in the Quasi war
American slogan: “Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute.”

John Adams’ Reaction 1. Increases size of the American Navy
2. Passes Alien and Seditions Act Aliens and Seditions Act- Authorized the President to arrest citizens and deport immigrants who criticized the Federal Government

Democratic-Republican Reaction
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are greatly angered by both the Alien and Sedition Act and the Quasi War with France and draft the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions- States could nullify federal laws they felt were unconstitutional Nullify- To cancel or take out of effect
