Professional Books Hopefully some of you heard Ellin Oliver Keene last spring. I have not quite finished Engaging Children, but I considered trying to organize this presentation based on the 4 pllars of engagement as explained by Ellin in this amazing book which ended up being 4 of the chapters in the book – Intellectual Urgency, Emotional Resonance, Perspective bending, and The aesthetic world. As a former “lecturer” professor the professionalism and theory made me love Engaging children. I included the best books print edition although it makes more sense to go to the online version. Ages 5-9 pdf

Traditional Literature with Spanish
Adam Rubin was inspired to write this unique bilingual format in honor of his grandmother who was a courtroom translator. Sometimes you need to read the jacket to find out the most about a book.
15
Unique bilingual inspired by Adam Rubin’s “Cuban grandmother, who was a courtroom translator for thirty years, inspired him to write this. A note from author Adam Rubin: "I decided to tell this story in an unusual way to explore the beauty of harmony. It's easy to dismiss the unfamiliar, but compassion takes a little more effort. With so many people trumpeting divisiveness right now, it's more important than ever to teach kids that there is more than one way to understand the world."

Two of Pernille’s Best of 2018 So Far
Who Are You - Kids guide to gender which will give adults what they need to discuss this difficult topic. Small things – Great Start for dealing with Childhood Anxiety.
30
Two of Betsy Bird’s Best 2018 so far
Julian is a Mermaid – Example of a few new books about boys identifying with non-conforming ideals of gender identity and beauty – others are Sparkle Boy and I Love My Purse Moris Micklewhite, Big Bob Little Bob, Williams Doll Rabbit Listened – Tender exploration of grief and loss and great reminder of power of listening
31
Fantasy Granted and Cruel Prince are both books about fairies. Holly Blacks is, in my mind, middle school up Granted will appeal to kids who have moved beyond the Disney Fairies series Bob – Loved this fantasy – think it will make a great family read or listen when in the car. Wild Robot Escapes – Roz finds herself in a farm and really is a capable hand. Unicorn Rescue Society – First book is set in New Jersey – Elliot & Uchenna are on a field trip To the Pine Barrens and bring home a creature.
32
Poetry Best design – jacket design, author’s notes, dedication, pagination, index, and acknowledgment. Humor reminiscent of Prelutsky and Silverstein Monica Edinger read to 4th or 5th a few poems every morning. Crescent Moons – Can I touch your Hair? – Amazing Writing partners in conversations and poetry about race. Great vehicle for families or classes to talk about race. Out of wonder is actually last year, but I have an autographed one to give away.
33
Poetry honoring black boys
13 ways – 13 Tanka poems (31 syllables distributed among 5 lines
34
Contemporary Realistic Fiction
You Go First – story of friends who meet and only have a relationship due to their playing of on-line scrabble - Mason Buttle – Mason is the biggest – sweatiest kid who has suffered a grief that may tie into his learning disabilities. Wonder teacher is portrayed and the story has a lot to talk about. Lightning Girl – Lucy is struck by lightning at age 8 and becomes an acquired savant – math genius. She has been homeschooled and is now being thrown into a conventional 7th grade. Breakout - Incredible format of a fictionalized account of an event when inmates escape a prison throwing a community into disarray. Lots to talk about indluding judicial system, social justice, and race relations.
35
Historical Fiction Front Desk - Set in Anaheim, CA in 80’s this has some elements of memoir of Kelly Yang’s experience as an immigrant. Night Diary – Written in the form of 12 year old Nisha’s letters to her mother (who died giving birth to her and her twin). Follows as she becomes an immigrant during the 1947 partitian of India and Pakistan Journey – Difficult read as it is written in dialect, but great to listen to audio book. - Monica Edinger – my favorite reviewer. Story of child of sharecroppers who in order to work off his families debt is sent with Capn Buck to capture some previously enslaved people. Set just after the civil war.
