7 Western front The Western Front describes the “contested armed frontier” of which the allies occupied the West side It consisted of two important battles for Canadians: the Battle of Sommes and the second Battle of Ypres It was here, at the second Battle of Ypres, Canada went into battle for the first time Much of fighting on the Western Front was trench warfare (mostly static)

8 Western front – 2nd battle of ypres
Occurred on April 1915 in Belgium The only major attack launched by the Germans on the Western Front in 1915 This was the first battle for Canadians in WW1 It was at this battle that chlorine gas was first used by the Germans on the Western Front The battle lasted three weeks, and in the end it settled nothing Canadians proved themselves as effective a fighting force as their wartime contemporaries

9 Western front – Battle of vimy ridge
Most famous battle for Canadian soldiers Took place on April 1917 in France Vimy Ridge was a crucial military position as it overlooked the plains of Artois Within an hour the German front and second lines had been overtaken by Canadians Eventually the entire ridge was under Allied control However, in the battle 10,602 Canadians were wounded and 3,598 were killed The German force, on the other hand, suffered 20,000 casualties
