3 Chip - All Varieties V-Chips - Aluminum Electrolytic
Rectangular Chips - Al. Electrolytic Film Chips

4 How Do They All Fit? As you can see from the chart, the aluminum electrolytic, film and mica chips are very complimentary to each other. There is very little overlap from one line to another. Each prodct line serves a specific area of the value/voltage domain. Tantalum and ceramic chips have been purposely omitted because Jim Navaro will discuss those separately. The mica chips are shown to show the synergy among these devices. Mica chips will be discussed by Joe Gracia.

5 SPA Chip Series

6 SPA Chip Capacitor Series
Rectangular chips ESRD ESRE ESRH SPA Features Ultra Low ESR High Ripple Current Low Profile The SPA series has a limited range and is primarily for low voltage applications. It offers a solid polymer construction that does not have a dry-out failure mechanism and excellent electrical characteristics. In the low voltage area where space is at a premimum, it is an excellent choice.

7 V-Chip Series

8 AFK Liquid Electrolyte
Long life Low ESR Large operating range At one time the AFK was considered the best performer in the group. But as evolution came about the SPV was developed and became the more robust of the two.

9 Comparing SPA and AFK As yu can see, SPV encroaches into the AFK territory. At one point the AFK was the best performing V-Chip for low ESR and and high ripple current, and then came along the SPV that is even better. Price and performance will be the determining factor between the two V-Chips. Remember, when looking for better performance, in-place cost can be lower by using the more expensive, better performing unit.

11 Life at 105 °C Solid Polymer vs Aqueous Electrolyte
This chart shows you the life advantage of the solid polymer part over the aqueous electrolyte. No leaking, no dry-out failure mechanis, longer life and better performance. What more could you ask for?

12 CDE V-Chips - Mature Product
CDE V-Chips Focus Four AVS Good General Purpose AFK Better Low ESR AEB High V V to 450Vdc CDE V-Chips - Mature Product The focus four V-Chips cover all applications and all future sales efforts should concentrate on these items. There are three other V-Chip products that have been around since the product was introduced. CDE intends to maintain support of these items but will direct any new designs to one of the Focus Four products. The mature product will be maintained for existing designs but will not be emphasized for new applications. The Focus Four product can replace any of these items for performance. There might be some difference in physical dimensions and reference should be made to the catalog in these instances. AHA Long Life AFC Low Impedance AHD Long Life

13 Competitiors for V-Chips
Nichicon Panasonic NIC Sanyo United Chemicon Vishay There are differences among all the competitiors and you should refer to the catalog when making any crosses from the competition to CDE. Somehave a broader capacitance and voltage range than CDE, but, for the most part, CDE has covered that popular items in all categories.

14 How To Sell V-Chips Typical DC/DC Power Conv. Circuit
This is a typical power conversion circuit. Between the input side power supply and the de/de converter is a 5.0uF 16Vdc capacitor for bulk storage. And between the dc/dc converter and the conversion power unit is a 1.8 to 5.0 uF output capacitor. The DC/DC converter can be purchased as a complete unit (brick) from somebody like Vicor, Astrodyne or others. Or if the customer is using the discreter approach, they will use a chip from Analog Devices, National Semiconductor, International Rectifier, Intersil or others and build the DC/DC power conversion circuit using discrete components. In either case, capacitors will still be needed.

15 Applications To Look For
Networking & Telecom (switches and routers) Computers (microprocessor power) Embed processors Test equipment Medical Equipment Electronic Gaming (slot machines)

16 Typical Power Conv. Accounts
Astec Power One Digital Power Corp Powertrends Motorola Intl. Power Devices Smart Power Intronics Datel Vicor BC Power Texas Inst. Interpoint Phoenix Aerospace Analog Devices Pico Electronics Some of these names should be reconizable. You know what is in your territory and what they produce.

17 National Catalog Houses for CDE
Allied Electro Sonic Mouser Newark These distributors stock the CDE line of V-Chips and may be recommended to those who are needing small quantities for prototyping or to make small production runs.

18 Critical Definitions ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance)
The internal resistance to current flow, resulting from the interconnection of the terminals to conductive material (electrodes) in the capacitor. This is expressed in ohms or milliohms. Ultra- low ESR is marvelous. Ripple Current This applies to DC applications with superimposed AC voltage. The ripple current rating is the maximum AC current the capacitor can handle. A high ripple current is scrumptious. Impedance This is the resistance to the flow of AC current measured in ohms. At high frequency, low impedance is terrific

19 CDE Chip Film Capacitors

20 CDE Chip Film Capacitors
Type FCN - PEN Dielectric Material General purpose 16V , 50V, 100V -55 °C to 105 °C 250V, 400V °C to 85 °C 1206 to 6040 case size Designed for IR reflow soldering Self cased in its own dielectric Stackd film construction

21 CDE Chip Film Capacitors
Type FCP - PPS Dielectric Material High temperature dielectric -55 °C to 125 °C Cap range: 100 pf to 0.22 mf Voltages: 16V and 50 Vdc Chip sizes: thru 2416 A good alternative for X7R ceramic capacitors.

22 CDE Chip Film Capacitors
Type FCA - Acrylic Resin Dielectric Minature size: 1.0mF in 1206 case High Temperature -55 °C +125 °C .01mF to 1.0mF 10 Vdc to 16Vdc

23 Films vs Ceramics Flms have no piezo effect - increase in voltage after shock Films have high thermal resistivity - no cracks Films are stable over temperature Films have no capacitance change with a bias voltage Films do not fail catastropically

24 FCP Film versus X7R Ceramic
In the first chart (frequency versus DF), the FCP film has the advantage over the X7R ceramic. In the second chart, you will see no cap change versus bias voltage for the FCP film chip but the ceramic changes over the entire spectrum.

25 FCP Film versus X7R Ceramic

26 Why Use a Film Chip? Sepecific need for reliability
Specific need for better performance Film chips will cost more than ceramics, so there will be a reason Films are self clearing Films have a soft end of life failure mode should they ever fail
