After the French and Indian wars, MI went under British control not until 13 years after the end of the Revolution did the British give up possession of Detroit and Fort Mackinac 1835 started process to become state. Problem with Toledo and 500 mile strip of land on Ohio boarder. Ohio much stronger, richer state. Congress forced a settlement that gave Ohio Toledo and gave MI UP

Established as county in 1833 Named for Edward Livingston, Secretary of State for Andrew Jackson Livingston Center (Howell) between Lansing and Detroit Originally part of Shiawassee and Washtenaw counties Livingston County sent represntatives to the Statehood Convention Howell created as good stopping point for stagecoaches etc between state capital and largest city

1837 first meeting to form Hartland Township 1838: 404 people in township Crouse families 2010: 15,000 people 1838 report also says 5029 in all of Livingston cty 2 sawmills, 5412 bushes of wheat, 2500 bushels of corn, 346 meat stock, 35 horses, 47 sheep and 278 hogs most people of german or irish descent crouse families 1842 JB crouse owned a general store sold everything to the township, other early bueisnsses saloons, dress shops, Hartland Area Project: Friendly association for community service help people to help themselves to better living bringing art, culture, religion, music and material wealth to area promote cooperation and responsibility in all areas build waldenwoods as retreat for Cromaine Society: honorary organization of leaders of every rank of Crouse-Tremain business interests.
