William Faulkner Born in New Albany, MS in He moved to Oxford, MS at age 4 where he lived the rest of his life. Won the 1949 Nobel Prize. He wrote most of his novel and short stories for money before he was awarded the prize. Battled alcoholism for most of his life. Died in 1962 of a heart attack

Yaknapatawpha County Faulkner’s literary depiction of Lafayette County in MS. The town of Jefferson is a representation of Oxford, MS. Most of his writings are set here. Critiqued the social values, customs, and lifestyles of post-Civil War Southern society.

Marquez’s similarities to Faulkner
Both authors create fictional towns relating to where they have grown up. Analyze the values and lifestyles of the people in their respective region. Post civil-war era. Used specific fictional families as the basis for the towns. Buendia family for Marquez and Bundrens, Compsons and Sutpens. Both towns are viewed as utopias at first, but are lost when they when outsiders violate the nature. Surrounding it. Communities struggle from their lost innocence.

Similarities Cont. Although Faulkner is not considered a magical realist writer, many of his novels had wondrous elements to them. Examined civil strife and exploitation amongst the characters Ultimately, both authors analyzed the human condition Marquez mentioned Faulkner in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech in He mentioned how both of their writings had a pervasive theme of solitude.
