John Steinbeck Born in Salinas, California; started writing at age 14 Always had great appreciation for the land In 1919, Steinbeck enrolled in Stanford University, dropped out for good in 1925 without a degree Moved to NYC to become a freelance writer, soon moved back to California and wrote several novels and collections of short stories Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940 for The Grapes of Wrath, about a family from Oklahoma attempting to start a new life in California during the Great Depression Won Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception" Died of heart disease in NYC

The Great Depression Began in 1929, lasted to the beginning of WWII in 1939 (worst years between ) Herbert Hoover was President at the start, FDR was elected in 1933 Causes: weak banking system, overproduction, crash on Wall Street in 1929 Employment rate was 25% between Almost half of US children did not have proper food, housing, or medical care Dust storms/droughts in 1930s made the Great Depression even worse, causing many farmers to abandon their land About 750,000 farms were lost, crime became a common way of life
