Give 2 examples of foods in each of the food groups What is digestion?

The food groups are broken down into their SIMPLEST form so they can be absorbed and used in the body

In your groups sort the cards into the 3 categories: - Carbohydrate - Protein - Fats

7 Food Group Contained in Simple units Complex carbohydrates (eg starch) Starchy and sugary foods Bread, pasta, rice & potatoes Glucose molecules Butter and oils Fatty Acids and glycerol Meat, fish and soya Amino Acids

9 In your groups Discuss in your groups and come to an AGREEMENT. Write your answer on the whiteboard How long is the digestive system?

10 The digestive system The total length of the digestive system is approximately 9 metres (roughly 30 feet)

11 Food’s journey through the digestive system- TASK
Number 1- The mouth Number 2- oesophagus Number 3- Stomach/Liver Number 4- Intestines You have ten minutes to gather the information for your piece of the jigsaw- work with the other “experts” to pick out the main points and summarise the information You will have 3 minutes (per person) to teach the rest of your home group about what you’ve learned- complete the jigsaw

12 Digestion begins.. Starts in the mouth
Mechanical- teeth break food into smaller pieces Chemical- saliva contains enzymes which starts the breakdown Think back to the bread

13 Next steps.. The food passes down the oesophagus to the stomach Think.. If we stand on our head and eat.. will the food still reach out stomach?

14 The journey continues.. Even if we are upside down, our food will still get to our stomach. After swallowing, food travels down our OESOPHAGUS, to our stomachs.
