Parts of the Digestive System
1. Mouth (oral cavity) Teeth chew food Mixes with saliva (salivary gland) to make a bolus Tongue pushes food to back of mouth for swallowing
6
Parts of the Digestive System
Esophagus Muscular tube joining mouth and stomach Lined with tiny hairs (cilia) Muscle contractions (peristalsis) move food at about 5cm per second
7
Parts of the Digestive System
Stomach Muscular sac Sphincters control entry and exit of food Contains strong acid to digest food (chemical) Muscles contract to mix food (mechanical)
8
Parts of the Digestive System
Small Intestine Long, narrow tube system Where most of digestion takes place Up to 7m long in adults
9
Parts of the Digestive System
Large Intestine (colon) Shorter and thicker than SI Water and minerals are reabsorbed here End of the line!
10
Parts of the Digestive System
Rectum Holds waste before removal Anus Controls release of feces
