Culture refers to the total lifestyle of a people, including all of their ideas, values, knowledge, behaviors, and material objects that they share. Culture shapes and guides people’s perception of reality.

What is the “culture gap”?
A culture gap is any systematic difference between two cultures which hinders mutual understanding or relations. Such differences include the values, behavior, education, and customs of the respective cultures.[1] The term was originally used to describe the difficulties encountered in interactions between early 20th century travellers and pre-industrial cultures,[1] but has since been used more broadly to refer to mutual misunderstandings and incomprehension arising with people from differing backgrounds and experiences.
Culture gaps can relate to religion, ethnicity, age, or social class. Examples of cultural differences that may lead to gaps include social norms and gender roles. The term can also be used to refer to misunderstandings within a society, such as between different scientific specialties.

A culture gap is any difference between two cultures which prevents understanding or relations. Such differences include the values, behavior, education, and customs of the respective cultures. Culture gaps can relate to religion, race, age, or social class. What happens if you are unaware of the customs and values of another culture?

Dairy Association’s huge success with the campaign “Got Milk?” prompted them to expand advertising to Mexico. It was brought to their attention the Spanish translation read, “Are you lactating?”

Clairol introduced the “Mist Stick”, a curling iron into Germany, only to find out that “mist” is German slang for manure.

16. Gerber in africa
When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used US packaging with the smiling baby on the label. In Africa, companies routinely put pictures on labels of what’s inside, since many people can’t read.

Pepsi’s “Come Alive With the Pepsi Generation” in Chinese translated into “Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back From the Grave”.

19. Culture and archetypes
So, what’s up? Why are we learning about culture today when we just played an archetype review game? Archetypes are related to culture. There is no “culture gap” when you have archetypes. Why? Think about what archetypes are and what they do.

20. Today’s central idea
Archetypes connect us! They are models that ALL cultures use.
The Hero’s Journey applies to thousands of stories, not just American ones.
Additionally, the Hero is in every story, whether it’s an Indian folktale or a German fairy tale.
We will look at creation stories next class to start exploring this idea.
