Let go of any old negative experiences, much has changed in terms of content and assessment Allow your daughter make the decisions as much as possible Trust her judgement, she knows what she likes best and is able for
5
Which subjects to keep
6
Careful Considerations Subjects that subdivide in 5th Year If choose Business/ Science now, they subdivide in 5th Year Science Biology Physics Chemistry Business Accounting
7
Careful Considerations Regarding Subjects
Science – Many science/science related courses (especially honours degrees) require a science subject e.g. Nursing, Biological/Chemical Sciences 3rd Language (French or German in our case) – Unless students have a language exemption, 3rd language is a requirement for many colleges as a direct entry , General Entry Requirement e.g. UCC
8
3rd Language Required – General Entry Requirement
Unless your daughter has an exemption, University College Cork, Galway, Dublin, Maynooth (NUI) require a 3rd language for direct General Entry in many courses Cadetship in Army, Air Corps, Cadetship in Navy, Unless you are already a college graduate
9
No 3rd Language General Entry Requirement
Trinity College Dublin University of Limerick Dublin City University Institutes of Technology Post Leaving Certificate Courses Science, Nursing courses at NUI's e.g. UCC
10
University and Institute of Technology Matriculation (General Entry) Requirements
NUI University: English, Irish, Maths, 3rd Language for most courses, e.g. UCC (not required if exempt) Institute of Technology: Maths, English or Irish Every college is different. Check college websites, undergraduate courses.
11
Keep in mind for your daughter
The subjects needed for her future What subjects she enjoys/ feels she has an ability for What are the relevant/helpful subjects Which subjects has she consistently done well in What type of learner she is Is she getting a balance of subjects –practical/non practical or would she prefer more practical
12
What not to do Encourage her not choose subjects according to:
Who is teaching the subject What friends are doing Amount of work or homework you think is involved in the subject Pressure from others
13
The safe bets As long as your daughter has: English Irish Maths
Science 3rd Language – French/German She is covered for almost every course in country In saying that, don’t suggest keeping subjects that are too difficult, there are back door entry routes.
14
