“Jazz” Jazz dance is a mirror of: Social history (dance & music)
Ethnic influences (African & other) Historical events (War, Great Depression) Cultural changes (Immigration, melting pot)

A New World In Africa, every part of life was celebrated with music & dance. Influences came to USA. African dance had rhythm and movement that influenced jazz music & jazz dance African slaves were cut off from their families, tribal traditions, and language Laws were made so that slaves could not play drums or dance

Characteristics of African Dance
Knees bent Foot stamping & use whole foot Tap & hand clapping Rhythmic voice sounds Great importance on improvisation and individual expression. Use of back and spine, arms, leg movements Polyrhythmic & Syncopation

Cake Walk= Southern Entertainment
Social dance African Americans coupled up & danced in a circle. As they paraded they would compete with intricate dance steps. Purpose was to compete & win the prize of a cake

Minstrel Shows White performers would paint their face black and would make fun of slaves’ lives & popularized African dance/music

Minstrel Show= Southern Entertainment
After slaves were freed, African Americans replaced the white performers & put the shows on themselves. African Americans would perform the cakewalk on stage. Buck & Wing was introduced at the minstrel shows by dancers. Buck & Wing was influenced by the Irish jig & English clog. Fast legwork & minimal arm work. Polyrhythmic like African music Helped create jazz music

Vaudeville - American Variety Entertainment

Vaudeville Came from the word variety.
Roots in Europe where performers would travel from village to village. Eventually moved to musical theatre with: Elaborate sets Integrated stories Audiences were more sophisticated.

American Ballroom Dance 1910-1915
At the close of the minstrel period, American ballroom became popular! WWI started in 1914 People were dancing in public (restaurants & clubs) Jazz music was becoming popular Over 100 dances emerged and disappeared from the Ballrooms Foxtrot outlasted any others

Invention of the record player
This was a big innovation for dance. You could dance to jazz music whenever you wanted. You didn’t need a band to play.

1920’s –End of WWI Americans wanted to prosper & thrive
Dances reflected cheerfulness & freedom Jazz dance was influenced by ragtime & Dixieland music Charleston became a hit dance which used body isolations for the 1st time, hand clapping, & foot stamping Bill “Bojangles” Robinson was a famous Broadway & film tap dancer that achieved world fame through clean & clear percussive rhythms of his taps.

1930’s-Great Depression People sought an escape from their dreary lives Dance marathons was to win cash prizes grew popularity Jazz music moved from ragtime & Dixieland to Big Band full orchestra music Swing Music Era began Swing Dance was high energy Boogie Woogie was knee swaying & foot swinging Jitterbug (Lindy Hop) box step brought back the solo style of dancing similar to African Dance Swing & Jive

1930’s Great Depression Musical films grew popular
Movie Stars: Fred Astaire & Ginger Rodgers Jazz Pioneer Fred Astaire- blended flowy ballet steps with the sharpness of jazz movements

1940’s-World War II & Low Dance Hall Attendance
Social jazz dance came to an abrupt stop during WWII Young men were enlisted in the war & women were sent to work in war effort factories Jazz music became too complicated to dance to for fun. Professional jazz dance was performed on Broadway stages & film

1940’s - Broadway Musicals Choreographed by ballet dancers.
“Oklahoma!” Jazz dance was starting to adopt ballet & modern technique Musical Theatre dance became and art of its own.

Late 1940’s-Jazz Dance becomes a technique
New York & Los Angeles become the center for jazz dance training. To feed film industry needs Musical movies hit the screens

Early 1950’s- Social Dance Decline Korean War & Hydrogen Bomb
Drama & dance blended into musicals with SERIOUS THEMES Americans had little to dance about in the early 50’s with war Singing In the Rain- choreographed & starred by Gene Kelly

1955- Rock n’ Roll Music & Dance back to Life
Social Dance came alive again. Rock n’ Roll inspired teens to dance in homes with record players Sock Hops were popular dance clubs Elvis Presley Rock n’ Roll Teen idol Blended hillbilly, gospel, blues, and popular music together to create his sound

1960’s-Young People Wanted Change!
Revolutionary ways of thinking The Twist- brought dance back Motown-Chubby Checker Matt Mattox-professional jazz dancer Viewed the body as a straight line See what designs can come from it Dance Studios & 5,000 Clubs opened up Talk shows with dancing teens in the background Beach movies brought on popular bands: Beach Boys Boy Bands brought on dances Swim, Jerk, Hitchhiker

Oscar, Tony, & Emmy award winner “Chicago” Distinctive technique with the limp wrist Erotic, long-legged look

1970’s Disco & Break-Dance Break-dance was a competition & an alternative to gang warfare Break-dancing was popular in the ghetto neighborhoods of NYC Break-dance came from West African dancers who settled in the S. Bronx Disco clubs & line dances became popular: Bus Stop Bump Rollercoaster Hustle

1980’s- Dance Sells! Use dance to sell music
MTV begins 1981 with music videos such as Thriller Dance in movies-less story, more showy dance Fame, Stayin’ Alive, Dirty Dancing, Electric Boogaloo Jazz dance sells in commercials, workout classes (jazzercise), movies

1990’s- New School Hip Hop is Here!
Emerged from Break dancing of the 1970’s. New school hip hop is in rap videos Hip Hop constantly changing though rap culture New school hip hop is a style of clothing, attitude, & music
