Brief history of Liepāja (1/2)
Liepaja has developed from small fishermen villages located near Liva River On April 4, 1253 this place was first mentioned in documents Because of the port’s progress a Transatlantic ferry line Liepaja – New York – Halifax was opened in 1906 From 1899 to 1909 a military port, and 8 km of land forts were constructed, the military town built around it with Officer’s Palace, Orthodox Church, and Riding Manege

After the Word War I, when the independent state of Latvia was founded, Liepaja became the capital (returned to Riga only after half a year) During the Soviet times, one third of the city was a Soviet Naval Base with 26 thousand military members, thus Liepaja became a closed city and even local people had to have a special permit to enter the city In 1915, Liepāja's local government issued its own money - Libava rubles The organ of Liepāja Holy Trinity Cathedral is one of the most outstanding masterpieces in the world, it is famous for its size, history, visual image and musical quality

About the programme Master's study program NEW MEDIA ART is multi-disciplinary, dynamic, real practice led, research-based, oriented towards cooperation and communication. Two pathways are offered: - ACOUSTIC ARTS / DIGITAL MUSIC - DIGITAL NETWORKED MEDIA Study programme was launched in September Students acquire various new media (interactive, multimedia, sound, network etc.) instruments and skills in creating art works. Key of this programme is research - including researching art processes. Emphasis is on art as research - within new media art it means that the artist is not only the creator of art work, but also researcher and practitioner of new instruments, media, technology, social process, scientific discoveries. Scholarship European Social Fund scholarships for Liepaja University Master degree students of “New media art” and “Information technology” study programmes. Only student who had successfully passed the prescribed period can apply for scholarship. The amount of scholarship: 430 EUR per month.
