2 British Literature Refers to literature associated with the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, as well as literature from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, prior to the formation of the UK

3 The Medieval Period 450-1066: Old English (or Anglo-Saxon) Period
: Middle English Period religious writings as well as secular works

4 The Renaissance 1558-1660 Age of Shakespeare

5 The Neoclassical Period
The literature of this time is known for its use of philosophy, reason, skepticism, wit, and refinement Influenced by contemporary French literature, which was in the midst of its greatest age.

6 The Romantic Period characterized by its personal nature, its strong use of feeling, its abundant use of symbolism, and its exploration of nature and the supernatural belief that literature should be spontaneous, imaginative, personal, and free Gothic literature was born: dark and gloomy settings and characters and situations that are fantastic, grotesque, wild, savage, mysterious, and often melodramatic
