1 Asexual v. Sexual Reproduction
LE 5.1: I can identify forms of, and distinguish between sexual and asexual reproduction.

2 Warm Up What is a karyotype? Why would analyzing one be particularly useful? Differentiate between frameshift and point mutations. How are antibodies and antigens different? Write the equations for photosynthesis and respiration.

3 What are Yeast? Yeasts are microscopic, single-celled organisms related to fungi--- the biological group that also includes mushrooms and mold!

4 Offspring? -A product of reproduction Ex: You! (children)
Ex: A litter of kittens

5 A= without, sexual= sex : Asexual reproduction = mitosis = cloning

6 Warm Up & Visual Analysis
Why are restriction enzymes useful? Identify the process they are associated with in your response. Visual Analysis- Explain what is happening in the following diagram.

7 Focus: Why is asexual reproduction and mitosis vital for survival. (L
Focus: Why is asexual reproduction and mitosis vital for survival? (L.E 5.2) Learning Target: I can evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of asexual reproduction. Tasks: Warm Up (5-10 mins) (On the whiteboard) Introduction to Mitosis Who Killed Yew- Murder and Mitosis Case (25-30 mins) Extension: Yeast Reproduction Lab Reflection Closure: Review the focus question (5 mins) Homework: Page 24 in packet & Completed Study Log due Monday.

8 Benefits of Asexual Reproduction
Conserves the good genes of the parent (OFFSPRING ARE GENETICALLY IDENTICAL) Numerous offspring can be made quickly and easily Can reproduce even if it is hard to find a mate

9 Asexual reproduction v. Mitosis
Asexual reproduction is the process of producing an organism from a single parent. The entire organism as such is reproduced. Whereas in Mitosis only the cell divides itself and forms two cells. Mitosis occurs in asexual reproduction, dividing the cells, in turn forming a new organism. Take out your Kirby diagram. We will discuss an example.

10 Types of Asexual Reproduction
1) Budding New organism grows on the body of the patent. When the bud is big enough, it breaks off and lives on its own. Ex: Yeast and hydra

11 Types of Asexual Reproduction
2) Fission An organism splitting to make copies of itself EX: Ameoba, Bacteria, Paramecium

12 Disadvantages of asexual reproduction
Lack of genetic variation Share the same weaknesses Greater risk of extinction

14 Types of Asexual Reproduction
3) Vegetative Propagation Plants reproducing without seeds Grow from roots Ex: Potato sprouts Ex: Runner plants like ivy

16 Mitosis and Meiosis working together?
