1 Review Energy Types

2 Energy Types From Atmosphere: From Lithosphere: From Hydrosphere:
Solar Wind From Lithosphere: Fossil fuels Nuclear Geothermal From Hydrosphere: Hydroelectric Tidal and ocean currents

3 Non-Renewable Resources
Geothermal Energy → Derived from lithosphere Fossil Fuels → Derived from lithosphere Hydroelectric Energy → Derived from hydrosphere Nuclear Energy → Derived from lithosphere Tidal Energy → Derived from hydrosphere Solar Energy → Derived from atmosphere Wind Energy → Derived from atmosphere

4 Non-Renewable Resources
1. Burning of Fossil Fuels (coal, natural gas, oil) - Carbon based substances burned to produce heat - boils water - Boiling water turns turbine - Turning turbine produces electricity Cons: Produces GHGs and other pollutants Energy Transformation: Chemical → Thermal → Kinetic → Electric

5 Non-Renewable Resources
2. Nuclear Energy - Splitting of atom to release huge amount of energy, - boils water - Boiling water turns turbine - Turning turbine produces electricity Cons: Nuclear waste is radioactive, risk of accidents Pros: no GHGs or pollutants, lots of energy! Energy Transformation: Nuclear → Thermal → Kinetic → Electric

6 Renewable Resources 1. Geothermal Energy
- Use Earth’s internal heat to boil water - Boiling water turns turbine - Turning turbine produces electricity Cons: Can’t use everywhere, expensive to install, may contaminate water Pro: no GHGs Energy Transformation: Thermal → Kinetic → Electric

7 Renewable Resources 2. Hydroelectric Energy - Use movement of water to turn turbine - Turning turbine produces electricity Con: Can’t use technology everywhere (need large enough body of water), damages ecosystem Pro: no GHGs Energy Transformation: Kinetic → Electric

8 Renewable Resources 3. Tidal Energy/ocean currents - Use movement of underwater currents to turn turbine - Turning turbine produces electricity Cons: Can’t use technology everywhere (need large enough tidal range), expensive to install, damage to marine life a possibility Pro: no GHGs or pollutants Energy Transformation: Kinetic → Electric

9 Renewable Resources 4. Solar Energy - Photon hits photovoltaic cell, causes electrons to move - Moving electrons = electricity Cons: Sun not always consistent, expensive Pro: no GHGs Energy Transformation: Radiation → Electric

10 Renewable Resources Kinetic → Electric 5. Wind Energy
- Use movement of wind to produce electricity - Wind causes turbine to turn - Turning turbine produces electricity Cons: Wind not always consistent, can’t store, considered ugly, noisy Pro: no GHGs or pollutants Energy Transformation: Kinetic → Electric

11 Example Questions- Energy Resources
A community in Gaspé is researching the environmental impact of two different energy technologies: a tidal power plant and a coal power plant. For each of the energy resources the community is considering, state: • the energy source as renewable or non-renewable • the main environmental impact for each type of energy

12 Example Questions- Energy Resources
Tidal Power Renewable Negative impacts on aquatic life Coal Power Non-renewable Greenhouse gases!
