2 Native Americans Many experts believe the first people to reach North America arrived from Asia as part of a migration ,across the land bridge in the Bering straight called Beringia. Many Native American societies were organized by kinship groups and clans. A clan is made up of groups of families who share a common ancestor. Barter, or trade, within and among Native American groups was common. Native Americans believed it was right to use the land, but that land could never be owned or traded. Within a 100 years of Columbus arrival nearly ½ of Native Americans were gone due to diases.

3 Arctic/Subarctic Tribes: Eskimos(Inuit), Aleuts
Food: Berries, hunted whales, walrus, caribou and seals. Housing: Igloos or Sod Houses Resources/Lifestyle: Lived as nomadic hunters used sleds and Kayaks

4 Northwest Coast Tribes: Coos, Tlingit, Chinook, Salish
Food: Seals, clams, halibut Housing; Cedar plank housing Resources/Lifestyle: Lived in villages, held ceremonial dinners called potlatches where host gave gifts to guests.

5 Southwest Tribes: Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, Pima and Acoma
Food: Deer, sheep, maize, beans and buffalo Housing: Pueblos and Wickiups Resources/Lifestyle: Lived in homes made of adobe used irrigation to grow corn

6 Platue Tribes: Nez Perce, Yakima, Kalispell, Flathead
Food: Salmon, Antelope, Deer, Elk Housing: Tepee in summer, Lodges in winter Resources/Lifestyle: Lived in small family groups, Nez Perce created new breed of horse the Appaloosa.

7 Great Basin Tribes: Shoshone, Paiute, Chumash, Shasta
Food: Nuts, seeds, berries, snakes, lizards, insects, rodents and rabbits Housing: Wickiups Resources/Lifestyle: Lived in small family units

8 Plains Tribes: Blackfeet, Comanche’s, Pawnee, Arapaho, Apache, Crow, Cheyenne, Cree, Sioux Food: Maize, beans, seeds, nuts and berries and Buffalo Housing: Tepees Resources/Lifestyle: Nomadic Hunters relied on Buffalo to meet basic needs.

9 Southeast Tribes: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Seminole
Food: Deer, seafood, squash, maize beans and wild rice Housing: Framed houses (daub and waddle) Resources/Lifestyle: Tattoos, Black Drink, smoked Tobacco at ceremonies.

10 Eastern Woodland Tribes: Huron, Iroquois, Miami, Shawnee, Ojibwa
Food: Fish, shellfish, maize, squash, deer, maple sugar Housing: Long houses or Wigwams Resources/Lifestyle: Lived in villages, Lacrosse popular game, women had authority, lived with wives family.
