Mayan Technological and Scientific Innovation
By Anastasia Khilko, Kayla Crowley, Noah Lash, Sari Miller, and Murat Calkap
2
Kayla Crowley Mayans used a symbol system to do math.
0 was a leaf type object, and the rest was based off of counting on your fingers and toes. The number 20 was used to make the system! “The concept of zero was used at least as early as 36 BC.” Mayans mathematics influenced us on our mathematics today.

Kayla Crowley The Dresden codex:
Many old documents that helped the Mayans with their math symbols were lost. Some that stayed in sight were the Dresden codex, the Madrid Codex and Paris Codex, which is now kept in Paris × × 18 × × 18 × × 18 × 203 = is used in the Dresden Codex and it is the only system for which we have any written evidence.

Anastasia- Science The Mayans were considered one of the most scientifically advanced societies in Mesoamerica. Some of their scientific achievements include spears, clubs, and blades made of obsidian and chert. They created accurate calendars consisting of 260 days with a specific name and symbol. This helped them predict solar and lunar eclipses. The Mayans also created the Mayan Hieroglyphics which consisted of over 1000 characters. Probably the most useful of all of their creations was the hydraulics system. It helped bring and supply water through all of their communities. They created a number system (the vigesimal system) which had 20 essential digits. A dot and a bar represented numbers. Each number was one dot(two dots for the number two) , and for each five was one bar.

Sari Miller-Mathematics
1.The Mayans used the vigesimal for their calculations 2.the Maynas counting system only uses three symbols: a dot that represents one bar, a bar track of calendar events both past and future and even so people that weren’t educated could do simple arithmetic needed for trade and commerce 3.the mayan culture were aware of the number zero before any other culture 4.one of the numbers that were was special was 20 because it represented the number of fingers and toes a human can count on

Calendar By: Noah Lash The calendar was known as a Long Count
The Mayans could predict solar eclipses The calendar is based on two overlapping calendar cycles, (Tzolkin and Haab) which had one lasting 260 days (sacred year), and another lasting 365 days. (secular year) The Pyramid of Kukulkan was used as a calendar, because it had a total of 365 steps (equal to a calendar year of 365 days)

Calendar By: Noah Lash The Calendar was set to end on December 21, 2012 The calendar had 18 months. The names of the month were: 1. Pop 2. Uo 3. Zip 4. Zotz 5. Tzec 6. Xul 7. Yaxkin 8. Mol 9. Chen 10. Yax 11. Zac 12. Ceh 13. Mac 14. Kankin 15. Muan 16. Pax 17. Kayab 18. Cumku

Agriculture: Murat Agriculture in the Mayan civilizations was great. Although the the ancient Mayan Empire had rocky soil, vegetation thrived. This area received at least 36 inches of rainfall each year, which helped plantation thrive. Another source of water for the Mayans was found in Yucatan in natural wells called cenotes, supported by underground rivers. Basic concepts such as crop rotation and irrigation were not practiced in Mayan culture. They used basic stone tools and flint axes to clear vines and underbrush. Seeds were planted just before rainy season, and planted in shallow holes with digging sticks. Usually corn seeds were planted, but sometimes squash was too.

Agriculture: Murat The ancient Mayans grew a variety of crops in their fields such as: pumpkin sweet potatoes cucumbers watermelon chili peppers tomatoes, chote, avocado breadfruit papaya cotton, tobacco vanilla cacao Large amount of wild fruit Lastly Mayans also domesticated animals in order for other kinds of food. Those animals were: Turkeys Bees Ducks Dogs Also a small hairless mute dog was most prized for eating. Later on when cattle, pigs, and sheep were introduced by the Spaniards stopped eating dog.
