Talking movies, jazz music, flappers – women began dancing, smoking, cutting their hair, and wearing shorter dresses, new literature, modern art, architecture, and science
A new mass culture was now shared by millions in new developing countries
The world was now brought closer together than ever because of new inventions like movies, radio, and improved telephones

New Democracies
After WWI, Great Britain, France, and the US were the new powerful nations
France struggled with peace
New political parties struggled for power (Communists and other third parties)
Countries now feared Germany and wanted to secure their peace
PROBLEM: Germany could not pay their war reparations (debt)
Kellogg Briand Pact: US offered to loan Germany money to repay their war debt and to avoid war at ALL COSTS

Global Depression
Britain and France recovered from WWI, in part because of Germany’s reparations
US boomed! Became the world’s leading economic power (because of the roaring twenties)
October 1929 – Stock Market in NYC crashed
Banks closed
Without support from the US, Germany
Suffered and couldn’t pay back their war debt
Depression spread world wide
President FDR begins the New Deal

7. German children (and dog) playing with bundles German currency.
German woman burning the German Mark as opposed to firewood. The firewood was more valuable than the German currency.

Preached extreme form of nationalism
Nations must struggle – peaceful nations were doomed to be conquered
Pledged loyalty to authoritarian leader who guided and brought order to the state
Unlike communists, did not seek a classless society; believed each class had its place and functions
