Lifestyle There were hundreds of thousands of people who had arrived in Australia after the first world war. This had influenced Australia greatly in becoming a modern society. There experiences created new ways of eating in cafes and milk bars, new public buildings and approaches to leisure, new concepts of design and architecture and jazz music. People found new ways to entertain themselves. The 1920s were hard times with a depression that saw massive unemployment, poverty and hardship.

Music and art In the 1920s jazz and soul music were discovered. Louis Armstrong was the most famous jazz player at the time, he rose to fame in nightclubs. People would dance to music to leave their past behind them. People could listen to music in the comfort of their own homes because the gramophone was invented. Waltzing Matilda came out in the 1920s and it was Australia’s first recording. Movies were now being released and people could go to the movies. The most popular movie was Ben Hur.

Economy People started to borrow money which lead to debt.
During the 1920s many soldiers found themselves unemployed. Women started working When a soldier could find a job they would receive poor pay or working conditions The RSSILA (Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Imperial League of Australia) was created in this time period and provided valuable support for the soldiers and their family's Advertising for new products such as washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

Government Parliament moved from Melbourne to the new federal capital, Canberra. The White Australia Policy – allowing only white people to migrate into Australia. The government wanted more migrants. 450,000 migrants in Australia over a ten year period. Conflict between indigenous Australians and migrants. Indigenous Australians were taken from their traditional homes and forced into large reserves.

First successful flight from Melbourne to Perth – Perth, December 3rd Cadbury factory opens – Hobart, December 31st Melbourne’s worst floods – Melbourne, October 14th Aboriginal race is now a ‘dying race’ Vegemite was invented Compulsory voting Parliament moved from Melbourne to the new federal capital, Canberra
