Rural Health In Idaho Idaho
Over half of Idaho is scarcely populated and present a challenge in the delivery of good health care efficiently and effectively. Thirty-five of Idaho’s 44 counties are rural with 19 considered frontier, ( < 6 people/ square mile. There are 93 Health Professional Shortage Area designated areas in Idaho. There are 53-designated medically underserved areas, (MUA). Three types of Health Professional Shortage Areas, ( HPSA) Primary care -96.4% Dental – 97% Mental Health – 100%

107 towns or villages in Idaho with less than 1,000 residents. Population count in these towns and villages is about 55,000

County Health Rankings is based on measures of how long people live and how health people feel. Less color intensity indicates better performance

Disparity in Health Status in Idaho
Significantly higher level of health disparity in rural areas

Adequate Prenatal Care
Prenatal care disparity was seen in 2016 in regions 3, 5,6,and 7. High risk population was found to be young and American Indian mothers

Low Birth Weight Births
Overall Idaho has a lower rate of low birth weight babies than national average. Low birth weight disparity was found in regions 5 and 6.

Suicide Death Rates Idaho has a significantly higher suicide rate than national average. The rate in regions 2,4 and 6 is significantly higher than state rate Risk populations are males and middle aged adults.

Percent With Heart Disease
Idaho rates of reporting heart disease has been lower but percent in is equal to national rate. No significant difference in rates by region.

Heart Disease Deaths Idaho has a lower rate of cardiac related deaths.

Current estimates are that about 110,000 Idahoans are uninsured. Higher rates in the rural areas of the population being uninsured

Free Medical Clinics and Federally Qualified Medical Clinics have been serving the uninsured and low income population. Free Medical clinics are dependent on volunteerism, donations, and negotiation skills.

New Modification to a Medical Clinic Model
Middle class population is on the narrow line of not affording to have coverage or use their coverage due to premiums and high deductibles. New take on old concierge model, geared to this population.
