The Roaring Twenties started in the 1920s as a “roller-coaster ride” for America. It took place after the moral intensity of the Progressive Era.

4. What does the Roaring 20s Mean?
The “Roaring Twenties” is often referred to as a lively era of prosperity, fast cars, jazz, speakeasies, and wild youth. The 1920s is known for its popular culture of the decade. Many people defied laws of Prohibition (consumption of alcohol) and indulged in new styles of dancing and dressing, and rejected many other traditional and moral standards.

5. What were some of the things going on?
The 1920s were known for various images and names: The Jazz Age, “Lost Generation”, flaming youth, flappers (a term which referred to indecent unladylike women), radio, movies, bathtub gin, the speakeasy, cosmetics, etc.

6. What was the effect of the Roaring 20s on America, It’s people, and economy?
For America: For the first time, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. The nation’s total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and America is known to be a consumer society. For people: Americans let down their hair, and lived it up without any cares. It changed America’s culture. For economy: After the Roaring 20s the stock market crashed in 1929 and the Great Depression shortly followed.

1920: The tommygun patented by John T Thompson. The Band-Aid invented by Earle Dickson. 1921: First Robot Built. John Larson invented the lie detector 1922: Insulin invented by Sir Fredrick Grant Banting. The first 3-D movie is released. 1923: Garrett A. Morgan invents a traffic signal 1924: Notebooks with spiral bindings invented.

9. What does the term “Lost Generation” Mean?
Referred to the 1920s because it was the generation of men and woman that were coming of age immediately after WWI. An unfulfilled generation coming to maturity during a period of instability.
