2 NEW WAR, NEW ALLIES Russia (AKA: USSR, Soviet Union), Italy, and Japan have joined Germany and their allies Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin, signed Nonaggression Pact Germany and Soviet Union would not fight against each other Pact was intended to last 10 years How did Hitler persuade Stalin to join Germans? Stalin was promised territory Germany and USSR both agreed to split up Poland between them USSR could take over Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia

German aircraft began bombing Poland’s capital, Warsaw France and Great Britain declared war on Germany two days later This declaration of war came too late Poland fell to the Germans Hitler annexed Western Poland Stalin claimed Eastern Poland

Lend-Lease Act passed on March 1941 Lend or lease arms or other supplies to countries vital to US US navy were escorting British ships carrying U.S. arms Hitler ordered German submarines to sink any ship they encountered. September 4, German U-Boat fired on U.S. ship in the Atlantic President Roosevelt ordered navy to fire on any German submarines

Japan looked to help their economy They targeted European colonies in Southeast Asia What were the Japanese hoping to get from European colonies? Japan planned on taking over American controlled islands, Philippine Islands and Guam Japanese perceived Pearl Harbor as a threat to their takeover So, what did the Japanese do in order to claim European and American colonies?

December 7, 1941 Japan surprised attack the American fleet at Pearl Harbor 19 ships were sunk or damaged 2,300 Americans killed This allowed Japan to conquer Guam and other islands in the pacific

Under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, 16 B-25 bombers attack Tokyo and other Japanese cities This raid begins to show Japan’s vulnerability Other battles fought in the pacific begin to lift American morale

13 JAPANESE SURRENDER President Truman is told by advisers there is a quick end to the war The atomic bomb, or A-bomb, was a new powerful weapon First atomic bomb was exploded in New Mexico on July 16, 1945 President Truman notified Japan on surrendering, if they didn’t surrender, they should expect a “rain of ruin from the air”
