Warm Up 12/11 If Hamlet were your friend, what advice would you give him about his relationship with Ophelia? Why? Evaluate Hamlet’s relationships with his friends and associates. Does Hamlet seem to be surrounded by people he can trust? Explain.
2
Learning Targets I can participate in a review of an Act II study guide in order to label each question by its appropriate scene and line. I can discuss key elements of Act II with my class.
3
15 more minutes to finish the sheet…
And then we’ll review!
4
Discussion Question 1 As a class, describe Hamlet’s behavior when he visits Ophelia in scene 1. Do you think his actions provide evidence of his insanity or are his actions motivated by something else (If insanity, go to the LEFT of the room. If something else, go t the RIGHT)? With classmates, take three minutes to decide how to defend your response.
5
Discussion Question 2 Instead of acting to avenge his father’s death right away, Hamlet waits a while, eventually concocting a plan. Do you think Hamlet’s hesitation in approaching his task of revenge is a sign of cowardice, or is his thoughtfulness admirable and understandable (If cowardice, go to the LEFT of the room. If thoughtfulness, go to the RIGHT)? With classmates, take three minutes to decide how to defend your response.
6
Discussion Question 3 With the same group, take three minutes to address this question: The level of suspense escalates in act 2. How does Shakespeare accomplish this?
7
Homework Create a drawing that illustrates Hamlet’s visit to Ophelia in Act II. Convey the characters’ feelings in their facial expressions and body posture. Under the picture, identify the characters’ feelings in that moment of the play and explain how you’ve successfully illustrated these feelings.
