The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
English 3 April 6, 2018 Clear your desks of everything EXCEPT something to write with, your notes, and your Norton Anthology. DO NOW: Think about a time when you felt ashamed about something you had done. For example, maybe you lost something you borrowed or forgot your best friend’s birthday. How did guilt affect you? Write a few sentences in your notes to describe the situation.
2
Predict What does it mean to have an albatross around your neck?

Albatrosses in the News…
“The ‘Vanilla Ice’ that we remember, and anthem of that stereotype, ‘Ice, Ice, Baby,’ are no longer a suffocating albatross around his neck. He's come to accept it all and honestly appreciates the fans that fondly remember the tune that marked so many moments of their youth.” “…Worse still, will No Strings Attached with its ubiquitous trailer and release date four days before the Academy Awards nominations are announced, become an albatross around Natalie’s Oscar neck?” “…the overall success of Obamacare is seriously in dispute. If the legislation lives out the next two years more or less in tact, it will be a serious albatross around Obama’s neck as he struggles for re-election.”

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
The Mariner’s burden is the origin of the saying “an albatross around your neck.” “water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink.” Samuel Taylor Coleridge is known for weaving intense, supernatural imagery throughout his storylines. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
This is an adventure story, ghost story, and religious parable all rolled into one. Coleridge’s poem focuses on the ideas of guilt and redemption, and respecting all creatures. British writers naturally reinterpreted Bible stories and Christian views of heaven and hell because they were constantly exposed to them. Here, we also see the concerns of the times reflected in this story. Age of Exploration, slavery, environmental destruction The general idea of respect still rings true.

17
Parts 4 & 5 What does the Wedding Guest think about the Ancient Mariner? Why does the frame tale keep interrupting the Mariner’s story? How is the Mariner feeling when he says, “My soul in agony.”? Why is there so much repetition in that stanza? “I looked to heaven, and tried to pray” Why does Coleridge use the word “tried”?
18
Parts 4 & 5 “For the sky and the sea, and the sea and the sky”—why the repetition? “O happy living things! No tongue/ Their beauty might declare:/A spring of love gushed from my heart,/And I blessed them unaware:/Sure my kinds saint took pity on me,/ And I blessed them unaware.” Why is this stanza SO IMPORTANT!? What does the Mariner notice/learn?
19
Parts 4 & 5 Does he really pray? Look at the description.
How is he feeling at the beginning of part 5? How do we know? How is the supernatural utilized in Part 5? How had the souls of his shipmates changed? What is the Mariner’s penance?
