Multiplying Integers

Copy and complete the table.
Multiplication Repeated Addition Sum 3 • (–5) –5 + (–5) + (–5) –15 5 • (–4) –20 –4 + (–4) + (–4) + (–4) + (–4) 2 • (–8) –8 + (–8) –16 –40 4 • (–10) –10 + (–10) + (–10) + (–10)

Evaluate each product. 1. 2(–6) = –12 2. 4(–3) = –12 3. 7(–2) = –14

Multiplying Integers The product of two integers with the same sign is positive. The product of two integers with different signs is negative. The product of zero and any integer is zero.

Examples 3(4) = 12 –3(–4) = 12 3(0) = 0 3(–4) = –12 –3(4) = –12 –4(0) = 0

Multiply please… 4. –3 • 5(–4) = –15(–4) = 60

How about this one? 5. –9(–8)(–5) = 72(–5) = –360

Now for the homework…

The rules for dividing integers are similar to those for multiplying

Dividing Integers The quotient of two integers with the same sign is positive. The quotient of two integers with opposite signs is negative. Division by zero is undefined.

Examples 12 ÷ 3 = 4 12 ÷ –3 = –4 –12 ÷ (–3) = 4 –12 ÷ 3 = –4

Divide please… 1. 10 ÷ –2 = –5 2. –28 ÷ –4 = 7 3. = –8
