1 Cell Structure Quest Friday (50 pts)

2 In groups of 3 to 4... You have 7 Minutes. Draw a plant cell.
Make sure to label and define each part of the cell.

3 Organelles Specialized subunits of cells that have a particular function Prokaryotes have a few (e.g., ribosomes) Eukaryotes have many, usually surrounded by a membrane This where we get the term “Membrane-bound organelles”

4 Cell Membrane Also called plasma membrane
Protects and supports the cell Controls what enters and leaves the cell It is a lipid bilayer (what does this mean??) Found in all types of cells – prokaryotes and eukaryotes!

5 Cell Walls Present in plants, algae, fungi, and many prokaryotes.
Lie outside the cell membrane Main Function: Provide support and protection for the cell. Made of cellulose!

6 Nucleus The control center of the cell
Contains nearly all of cell’s DNA & instructions for making proteins & other important molecules. Parts inside: chromatin, chromosomes, nucleolus.

7 Nucleolus Small, dense region in the middle of the nucleus
This is where ribosomes are formed. The nucleolus is located inside the nucleus. It is not an organelle, but rather a visible region within the nucleus. It is the site of ribosome production

8 Cytoplasm Clear fluid within cell that contains all organelles
Moves materials throughout the cell It’s the light blue/gray stuff in this picture

9 Where proteins are assembled
May be free in cytoplasm or attached to ER PROTEINS ARE VITAL to LIFE

10 Golgi Apparatus Function: Modify, sort, and package proteins and other materials from the ER for storage in the cell or secretion outside of the cell.

11 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Two kinds: Smooth ER & Rough ER Site where lipid components of the cell membrane are assembled, along with proteins and other materials that are exported from the cell.

12 Lysosomes Small organelles filled with enzymes. Found in animal cells
Functions: Digestion

13 Vacuoles Saclike structure for storage.
Always in plants, sometimes in animals. Controls water content within the cell.

14 Mitochondria & Chloroplasts
M: Convert chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use. C: Organelles that capture the energy from sunlight and convert it into chemical energy in PHOTOSYNTHESIS

15 Cytoskeleton Network of protein filaments that helps the cell to maintain its shape.

16 Centrioles are made of microtubules
They migrate to either side of the cell and help to pull it apart during cell division Only found in animal cells! Centrioles are made of microtubules

17 Back into your groups for 10 minutes...
Update your plant cell. Include labels and definitions. Was anything marked incorrectly? Fix it When finished write your names down and hand them in on the front table.

18 Cell Factory Using your textbooks starting at page 175 complete your cell factory worksheet. When finished: Create your own cell analogy and do the same. (ideas: relate the cell parts to a city, a car, something creative) Include labels and a drawing.

20 Closure What is the difference between smooth ER and rough ER?
What is the job of the cell membrane? Homework: Trading cards (due Wednesday)
