Words may have similar denotations but very different connotations. childish: of or like a child (denotation) childish: being immature (connotation) Sometimes connotations are not positive or negative—they may have just varying degrees of meanings. Everyone stopped to look at Jessica because she was beautiful. Everyone stopped to look at Jessica because she was gorgeous. gorgeous carries more emotion than beautiful
