2 Hitler's Rise to Power After WWI, Germany was forced to pay for the destruction. Because of this, inflation increased and the economy decreased. After WWI, he took up work in the German Worker's party. He then came up in ranks and came in charge of the propoganda. His company renamed National-sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei. With his charisma, he was able to attract many people to the party. He was soon able to take advantage of the unrest during the depression and come to power in January, 1933. During this time, he spread his ideas of inequality amongst men, and used the Jews as a scapegoat for Germany's problems. The only reason people went along is because they wanted someone to blame for their hardships.

3 The holocaust and the atrocities that occurred during this period will be forever shrouded in sadness. This does not mean that we should not understand how this happened. Many of the most horrendous atrocities that occurred were carried out by so called "doctors". These doctors rose through Hitler's ranks and eventually gained a position of power which allowed these "medically minded" individuals to experiment on prisoners in horrific ways. They were the most feared, they had the authority over the life and death of prisoners.

4 "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. "
-John Dalberg-Acton

5 The most notorious "doctor"
Josef Mengele  The most notorious "doctor"

6 Joseph Mengele Before the Holocaust
Born on March 16, 1911, in Günzburg, Germany  In 1935, Mengele earned a Ph.D. in physical anthropology from the University of Munich.  In January 1937, at the Institute for Hereditary Biology and Racial Hygiene in Frankfurt, he became assistant of Dr. Otmar von Verschuer, leading scientific figure widely known for research with twins. In 1937 Mengele joined the Nazi Party. In June 1940, began medical service of the Waffen-SS. Wounded while on campaign, Mengele returned to Germany in January 1943.

7 Cont.  Worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Genetics, and Eugenics, directed by his mentor von Verschuer. In April of 1943, he received a promotion to the rank of SS captain; this advancement led to Mengele's transfer to Auschwitz, on May 30, 1943. Mengele undertook a position as Chief Camp Physician of Auschwitz.

8 Atrocities Committed  Performed “selections” of prisoners , determining from among the mass of humanity arriving at Auschwitz who would be retained for work and who would perish immediately in the gas chambers. Experimented with identical and fraternal twins in order to trace the genetic origins of various diseases. Documented in camp inmates the progression of the disease Noma, a type of gangrene which destroys the mucous membrane of the mouth and other tissues. Injected twins with diseases  Murdered children

9 Mengele post-war Josef Mengele fled to South America, but moved from country to country afraid of being caught. There were many warrants, rewards, and bounties offered.

10 Hitler's Personal Physician
Karl Brandt  Hitler's Personal Physician

11 Karl Brandt Before the War
He was born January 8th, 1904. He qualified as a doctor. Unfortunately, he did this a year before the Great Depression, and, as such, he wasn't able to find a job during this time. Because of this, he came to the Nazi party with disillusions of grandeur and success. He got his first "big break" when Hitler and his niece were injured in a car crash. He was summoned to help. He made such a good impression that Hitler recruited him as a personal physician.

12 Karl Brandt During and After the War
He was then promoted to Major General in the SS. Then officially appointed as the co-head of the T4-Euthenesia program. Hitler was in favor of Karl until the near end. This was because Karl Brandt moved his wife to a place that would soon be occupied by allies. This infuriated Hitler who then accused Karl of betraying him. Karl was taken to court and was immediately convicted, but he was saved when Himmler called for new witnesses. When the Allies, he was accused of crimes against humanity. He was sentenced to death June 2nd, 1948.

13 The T4-Euthanasia Program
In Germany, the govt. Issued a decree that encouraged women to bring newborn children and infants with disabilities to specialized clinics. These “clinics” were stations in which the people were systematically killed. Methods included systematic starvation, gassing, lethal injection, and medication overdose. Victims include infants and, later, teenagers. The public soon found out about the facilities, and Hitler ordered it to halt. It resumed again in August of 1943 and continued until the end of the war.

14 Carl Clauberg and his associates “doing their job"

15 Clauberg’s Life Born in Wuppertal in 1898 to a craftsmen family
Participated in WW1, later became interested in gynecology, aquired Joined NSGWP 1933, invited to Auschwitz to experiment 1942 Got control of Block No. 10 and went from there

16 “I am of the opinion that out of approximately 10 million European Jews at least 2–3 million men and women will be fit for work and should be kept alive. . . Of course this can only be done if they are at the same time rendered incapable of reproduction under my instruction experiments for this purpose have been complete the type of sterilization normally performed on persons with genetic diseases is here out of the question because it takes too long and is too expensive. Castration by X-ray however is not only relatively cheap, but can also be performed on many thousands in the shortest time.”  -Carl Clauberg

17 Carl Clauberg's practices
Carl's ultimate goal was to find a method of sterilizing Jews quickly, cheap, and easily He worked on sterilization methods for the Jews: His primary method was injecting a "secret substance" into the womb, which caused pain, inflammation, spasms, and bleeding Placed male and female sexual organs between two x-ray machines, most subjects died or were killed But did just the opposite for the German race: Also worked on a way to let infertile women conceive Heinrich Himmler ordered Clauberg to experiment with artificial insemination after hearing that he had fixed an SS officer's wife His "friends" included Horst Schumann and Dr. Johannes Goebel

18 Post-war: Clauberg was tried and sentenced to 25 years in prison by soviet authorities, but soon was released Was then arrested again by German authorities, but died before the trial began
