Tax Information—International Students

Who is this for? NOTE This information is for students on F-1 or J-1 visas who have been in the U.S. for 5 years or less.

Why do you have to file an income tax return as an International Student?
Because the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) says so! Everyone in the United States is required to file an income tax return. Since you are a student in the U.S. and living here temporarily, this includes you. Note: Interest from U.S. banks or credit unions is not considered source of income for nonresident aliens

Who has to file an income tax form?
EVERYONE (THIS INCLUDES ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS), whether you have worked the previous year or not, MUST file an income tax return.

If in U.S. in 2016 All international students nonresident for tax purposes (All individuals in the U.S. on F-1 or J-1 Student visas for 5 years or less or J-1 Scholar visas for 2 years or less) must file Form “Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition” Form 8843 is an IRS supplemental form (information only) that must be filed by all nonresident students in order to exclude the days of presence in United States from the Substantial Presence Test.

What information will I need?
Copies of previous year’s income tax return. If you filed an income tax return for the previous year, you will need copies of it for the current year’s filing (for example, this year you will need to bring your information from to utilize it for filing your 2017 income tax return).

What do I do now? File your income tax form electronically with Sprintax tax-prep. You will need to contact the Director of International Student Success for the code: lp.html?utm_ref=providencelp&utm_content=prmc DO NOT use any other online tax preparation software. If you are a non- resident for tax purposes, you are not eligible to file your tax return electronically. Commercially purchased tax return software will file your return incorrectly. Non-residents for tax purposes should only use the Sprintax software.
