What is an analyst? Being an analyst is more than analyzing.
You need to be able to gather information, review it, and consider the impact and present options in an easy-to-read format for the intended audience. Additionally, required skills may just be refinements of things you already know and do.

When using your analytical skills
• Don’t tell – advocate, research and recommend • Broaden your scope – always be learning & willing to share • Take yourself out of your comfort zone • Be visible and a go-to person • Think of all possible outcomes of a decision or process, and who it will affect (ex. System users, customers we support, analysts who pull the data) • Become self-reliant • Understand data / know what the data consists of • Use current/meaningful data • Be aware of restrictions and/or limitations of the data (i.e., what it doesn’t show) • Develop strong time management and prioritization skills • Interpersonal communication

Suggestions for Development
Work on projects identified after your team’s survey Give technical or procedural suggestions for improvement to your lead or manager Become a SME or the go-to person for something Volunteer to lead, train or coach Present a class Pull the position description (PD) and critical job elements (CJEs) of the job you’re interested in Create a career learning plan (CLP) with your manager with areas of interest and future advancement. You can list some of the development ideas noted above, or anything else that you can do in your current job that will help you on your path to becoming an analyst.
