A front is the area where enemy armies fight. During WWI, one front was in France and one was in Russia. New Technologies changed warfare during the “Great War” in terrible ways. 11 The Civilian War- The “Home Front”
World War I was the first total war meaning it involved not only the armies, but also families at home. The “home front” referred to non-soldier or civilians that worked at home to help fight the war. Factories shifted from making automobiles and other good to making bombs, airplanes, and guns. Women helped on the “home front” by taking factory jobs so men could join the army. They also became nurses and drove ambulances. Civilians also felt the effects of war through food rations, often “meatless” days and soaring prices.
