Hurricanes and NYC: Why Should We Care?
IT’S HAPPENED BEFORE Over 10 hurricanes have affected the NYC region in the past 200 years THEY’RE GETTING STRONGER Hurricanes will gain in intensity as warming increases WE’RE DUE FOR ANOTHER HIT – ARE WE PREPARED? A category 3 hurricane could cause a rise in sea levels of 1.5 feet, submerging parts of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island

RISING SEA LEVELS IN NYC
Sea levels have been gradually rising Current rate of 2.73 mm/year will be increased due to global warming Floods in NY tremendously impact transportation system, coastal land, wetlands, beaches, and shorelines As sea levels rise NYC will have to adapt different spheres of life Relocating people from coastal regions Use technology to preserve NY and prevent the disasters caused by extreme flooding
4
NYC Water Supply Only 3% of the Worlds Water is Freshwater but only 1% is accessible, meaning most of our water is either stuck in the ground or in glaciers. So Our Available Water is VERY important! Global Warming will cause an increase in temperature and solar radiation which in turn will cause Decrease in water supply due to lack of precipitation and more rapid evaporation More intense storms Floods due to sea level rises which can lead to contamination

We have the power to stop it!
