I’ll know I’ve got it when…
Learning target I can describe the difference between point-source and non-point source pollution and list an example of each. Today I am… learning about various types of water pollution. So that I’ll be able to… understand the short and long term affects of pollution on water. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can write 1-2 sentences describing the difference between point-source and non point-source pollution with an example of each.
4
There are several types of water pollution. They differ in terms of:
Where they came from Their effects
5
Point-source pollution
Pollution that comes from distinct, identifiable location. Ex: Factories, sewer pipes, ships
6
Real world example: A point source of industrial pollution along the Calumet River. (Source: EPA)
7
Factories, sewers, paper mills, pipe, etc.
Causes of PS pollution Factories, sewers, paper mills, pipe, etc.
8
Example: PS pollution When it rains excessively, a sewer system may not be able handle the volume of water, and some of the combined runoff and raw sewage will overflow from the system. It will discharge directly into the nearest waterbody without being treated.
9
Nonpoint-source pollution
Comes from many places and is hard to identify.
10
Non point-source pollution
Pollution that comes from many places spread over a large area. Ex: land runoff, precipitation, fertilizers from agricultural land.
11
Real world example: Motor oil is one source of nonpoint-source pollution.
12
Causes of NPS pollution
Rain or snowmelt moving over and through the ground.
13
NPS (stormwater) – 5 mins
14
Groundwater pollution
Industrial and agricultural practices are polluting our current groundwater.
15
Groundwater pollution causes
Natural (aluminum, fluoride) Human activity (fertilizers, pesticides)
16
How can groundwater pollution be cleaned up?
Sometimes polluted groundwater is pumped from the soil or bedrock, treated to remove the contamination. In this case groundwater contamination is addressed by containing the contamination in a limited area to keep it from harming animals and plants.
17
Ocean pollution Most ocean pollution comes from runoff (oil, chemicals, etc) and from direct dumping of wastes.
18
Great Pacific Garbage Patch
19
Dead zone – Gulf of Mexico
20
Dead zone 1. Excess nutrients enter coastal waters and help fertilize blooms of algae. 2. Algae die and sink to the bottom and provide a food source for bacteria. 3. During decomposition they consume dissolved oxygen from surrounding waters.
21
Major cause of Dead Zones
Agricultural runoff
22
Excess nutrients in water that cause major algae growth.
Algae bloom Excess nutrients in water that cause major algae growth.
23
Leave the oil alone, it breaks down by natural means.
Cleaning up oil spills Leave the oil alone, it breaks down by natural means. Contain the spill and collect it from the water surface using skimmer equipment. Booms: Used to accumulate oil and prevent it from spreading and facilitating its removal.
24
The Clean Water Act A Federal act that makes it illegal to release pollution from a point source without a permit.
25
Video – Ireland pollution (7 minutes)
We will watch this in class.
