4. There are several types of water pollution. They differ in terms of:
Where they came from
Their effects

5. Point-source pollution
Pollution that comes from distinct, identifiable location.
Ex: Factories, sewer pipes, ships

When it rains excessively, a sewer system may not be able handle the volume of water, and some of the combined runoff and raw sewage will overflow from the system. It will discharge directly into the nearest waterbody without being treated.

9. Nonpoint-source pollution
Comes from many places and is hard to identify.

10. Non point-source pollution
Pollution that comes from many places spread over a large area.
Ex: land runoff, precipitation, fertilizers from agricultural land.

11. Real world example: Motor oil is one source of nonpoint-source pollution.

Rain or snowmelt moving over and through the ground.

Industrial and agricultural practices are polluting our current groundwater.

Human activity (fertilizers, pesticides)

16. How can groundwater pollution be cleaned up?
Sometimes polluted groundwater is pumped from the soil or bedrock, treated to remove the contamination.
In this case groundwater contamination is addressed by containing the contamination in a limited area to keep it from harming animals and plants.

Most ocean pollution comes from runoff (oil, chemicals, etc) and from direct dumping of wastes.

1. Excess nutrients enter coastal waters and help fertilize blooms of algae.
2. Algae die and sink to the bottom and provide a food source for bacteria.
3. During decomposition they consume dissolved oxygen from surrounding waters.
