1 “Raymond’s Run” essay

2 Question: In many stories, characters learn through their relationships with others. Such is the case in “Raymond’s Run.” In what ways does Squeaky change over the course of the story? Be sure to: * Talk about the change in her feelings and relationship toward Raymond over the course of the story. Be sure to specifically discuss Squeaky’s actions and behaviors toward this character before and after the race. * Talk about the change in her feelings and relationship toward Gretchen over the course of the story. Be sure to specifically discuss the change in Squeaky’s actions and behaviors toward this character. * Explain the lessons these relationships teach Squeaky, how she changes and grows. Write an organized, well-developed essay that follows the conventions of standard, written English.

3 How do you begin? Know proper essay structure: introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion PLAN--Decide how many body paragraphs you will use. Decide how you can use supporting examples from the text to prove your point. 3. Begin writing. Follow your plan. 4. Recheck/revise

4 Introduction *Begin with a sentence or two on the general topic. (In this case it’s that people learn from relationships) *Introduce the specific author, title, and character connects to this topic in the next sentences. (In “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, Squeaky…) * Mention how the specific character connects to the topic following the assigned directions. (So you must briefly mention how Squeaky changes and how it relates to her brother and Gretchen.) You must finish a proper introduction by the end of this class. I will ask some of you to read yours aloud. If you finish early, plan out your response for the body paragraphs.

5 2. Body paragraphs Write a topic sentence for each paragraph that introduces the point of the paragraph. Use supporting evidence from the text. Consult your planning sheet and the story, which begins on page 34, while you write. Make certain you address each bullet point with specific supporting details.

6 3. Conclusion Begin with a topic sentence that summarizes the main idea of the essay. Summarize how Squeaky changed over the course of the story. GO BEYOND tell a general lesson readers can learn from all this
