After… Grab a textbook Read “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” on page Make sure that you read the background information on page 45 before beginning the piece. This can be done with a partner. Identify how Edwards uses logos, ethos, and pathos in his writing, writing down examples from his sermon for each. Also create a list of unknown words or phrases as you read. Locate key phrases and meanings from the sermon. What was Edwards’ purpose in writing it? How do you know? Identify areas that he uses figures of speech (for help with what these are, read the information on Figures of Speech on page 45). How is using these figures of speech effective to his overall meaning? How does this reading make you feel?

Create your own Speech Now that you have read “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” develop your own speech announcing something that you have done wrong, and explain why others should avoid committing that same wrong. Use at least three lines from Edwards’ sermon in your own writing. NOTE: If your wrong is something Ms. Murphy should probably not know about, you may make one up.

Brainstorm with a Partner
What do you think the culture was like in Edwards’ time? How might he have defined freedom? What were the expectations set for people living during that time? Who were the Puritans and what did they believe in? Why is this time period important to study and reflect on today?
