MADE OF: The outer membrane, the intermembrane space, inner membrane, and the matrix, only organelle other than the nucleus to have its own genetic material,
FUNCTION: Provide cell with energy, thus nicknamed the power plant of the cell, which they do by aerobic respiration from glucose broken down in the cytoplasm. They also metabolize amino acids fatty acids, and steroids. Because of this they provide four fifths of the body’s power.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Second largest organelle in the cell. It is widely thought that mitochondria were once bacteria that colonized animal cells, then evolved into the important organelle they are today.
