1 Friday NOTES: Mutations

2 (1) Mutations Mutation: Change in nitrogenous base sequence of DNA.
TYPES: Deletion Insertion Point

3

4 (2) Deletions Deletion: Removal of 1 or more nitrogenous bases.
Screws up triplet code  frameshift Will impact ability to make that protein. Example: Originally  AUGUUUCCUCAGUGA Met-Phe-Pro-Gln-Stop Mutation  AUUUUCCUCAGUGA Ile-Phe-Leu-Ser-GA???

5 (3) Insertion Deletion: Addition of 1 or more nitrogenous bases.
Screws up triplet code  frameshift Will impact ability to make that protein. Example: Originally  AUGUUUCCUCAGUGA Met-Phe-Pro-Gln-Stop Mutation  AUGACUUUCCUCAGUGA Met-Thr-Phe-Leu-Ser-GA???

6 (4) Point Mutation Deletion: Change in 1 nitrogenous base.
Maintains triplet code. May or May Not impact ability to make that protein. Example: Originally  AUGUUUCCUCAGUGA Met-Phe-Pro-Gln-Stop Mutation #1  AUGUUACCUCAGUGA Mutation #2  AUGUAUCCUCAGUGA Met-Tyr-Pro-Gln-Stop

7 (5) Consequences Positive (+) Negative (-)
Main reason for variation and diversity! Huge driving force behind evolution! Could be beneficial to organism and population! May have no effect at all! May hinder the production of a protein. Could cause a disorder or disease. Could kill an organism. Could cause cancer.
