Mitosis
2
What is the importance of cell division?
Reproduction Growth and development Tissue renewal
3
Interphase What are the steps? G1, S, and G2 What happens in each?
G1: The cell grows and prepares for duplication S: the chromosomes duplicate, copying the DNA G2: the last checkpoint! The cell grows once more and is ready for M phase
4
Some Terms to differentiate
Chromatin Chromosomes Sister chromatid Centromere When do we use each term? What do they all mean? Chromatin: DNA and protein coils Chromosomes: condensed chromatin Sister chromatid: identical half of a chromosome What connects the sister chromatids
5
Let’s make a memory cue…because why not
Interphase Prophase Prometaphase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase BE CAREFUL! Cytokinesis is NOT part of the M phase!
6
More terms Centrosome: Group of microtubules Centrioles:
Cylindrical microtubules Mitotic spindle: “wires” that pull chromosomes apart Kinetochore: where the spindles attach to the chromosome
7
Problems Sometimes, the checkpoints we talked about do not function correctly. What happens then? Cancer is a possibility due to rapid and uncontrolled division! A cell that loses this control undergoes what? Transformation
