2. Chapter 2 – God's Covenant with Abraham :
'Was Circumcision Required?'
We already saw Abraham was justified prior to circumcision. So, was circumcision optional?

3. Genesis 17:9-14: "9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant."

'Was Circumcision Required?'
We already saw Abraham was justified prior to circumcision. So, was circumcision optional?
Abraham's descendants "must needs be circumcised" (Genesis 17:13)
And not just for a generation, not a one time thing, but for an "everlasting covenant" (Genesis 17:13)
Those not circumcised were cut off by God (Genesis 17:14)
Circumcision was a command, not a suggestion! (Genesis 21:4)

5. CIRCUMCISION WAS NOT OPTIONAL!

What if someone refused to circumcise even if they were otherwise obedient?
God sought to kill Moses (Exodus 4:24-26), so even the great lawgiver could not bypass the covenant of circumcision.
God meant it when he said:
CIRCUMCISION WAS NOT OPTIONAL!
Genesis 17:14: "And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant."
