Secondary math 2 10.2 – Surface Area
2
Warm up: Find the area of the regular polygon
How do you find the area of: Rectangle Triangle Parallelogram Trapezoid Circle
3
Questions 10.1
5
What you will learn I will be able to calculate the surface area of any object.
6
Last time – ‘net’ for different objects
Net: pattern you can cut/fold to make a model of a solid shape.
7
Surface area The sides of an object you can ‘touch’. The ‘faces’
everything showing on the outside.
8
Surface Area of the blocks one square face = 1
4. 2. 1. 3. sdfsdfsdf
9
Surface area actual objects
What kind of object are you given? Look at the object you are given. What are the different shapes used to build that object? Use the ruler to measure, now calculate the area for each of those shapes? Add all those areas together. You have now found the surface area! Rectangular Prism Square Pyramid Cylinder Triangular Prism
10
Add up the areas of all the shapes that make your object!!!
SURFACE AREA Add up the areas of all the shapes that make your object!!!
11
Visualize the 3-d objects as flat parts (net)
To find the surface area of the cube, we add the area of all the sides.
12
Practice problems Identify the different shapes on your object
Calculate the shapes’ area Add all the areas together
13
Practice Problems ORANGE activity! Get a clementine, (in two halves)
Put the flat side of the clementine on your paper and use it to draw 5 or 6 circles. Peel your clementine. Use the peel to fill the insides of the circles (don’t overlap). See how many circles you fill up. Surface Area of a SPHERE
14
EXIT TICKET Calculate the surface area of this object.
See 10.1 notes if you need help with one of the shapes.
