2. OA R9 Assembly – Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Region 9 Assembly is the same as that of all OA service – to carry the OA message to the still suffering compulsive overeaters, wherever they live and whatever language they speak. In fulfilling our purpose, we should ever strive for worldwide OA unity and common policies among all countries. With love and tolerance as our code, together we can do what we could never do alone.

4. Priorities Goals and Plans For our Translations work.
When you work in your committees, try to think back over your time in OA & your recovery.
Have you read all / most of our OA literature in English?
Are you familiar with the documents that can be downloaded from ?
What OA Literature & Materials helped most with helping you find OA & then in your recovery?
What would other OA members might like to see in their own language?
The ‘Translated Literature Summary’ & ‘Translated Materials Summary’ have some suggestions for priority for translation.

5. Translation of OA Literature & Materials – Observation
We have relatively ‘small’ countries in R9 where there are more meetings per capita than might otherwise be expected in comparison with some ‘larger’ countries.
There seems to be a direct correlation between the number of meetings (and thus recovery) and the amount of translated literature available in a specific language.
In those countries where there is a ‘good’ supply of OA literature in the local language, this appears to be a direct result of members having a vision that ALL the OA literature would be translated and available locally.

6. OA Glossary of Words & Terms: -
Extract from the Guidelines for translation of OA literature: - 'Translate a glossary of OA’s special program words. We’ve found it helpful to start by compiling a list of program terms in the local language, for example: Higher Power, abstinence, plan of eating, food plan, sponsor, surrender, one day at a time, relapse, program. These terms appear often in OA literature and need to be translated the same each time they appear'. OA uses many words & expressions that are not necessarily common in everyday use. If your committee translates the glossary of program words it will save time and ensure consistency with your future translations. When you use the services of a professional translator it is important you give them a translated glossary of OA words & terms. An OA Master Glossary has been prepared in English

9. New Translation Procedure and Guidelines to cover all documents & information on (not photos).
Non-English-speaking registered groups and service bodies may now translate and distribute any downloadable document on oa.org without seeking permission from the World Service Office. These new procedure and guidelines create greater parity among all OA groups and service bodies that wish to carry the message and support the recovery of our worldwide Fellowship. Translated OA documents must include the following citation, written in the language of the translation: “This is a translation of OA-approved literature. © [date of translation] Copyright Overeaters Anonymous, Inc. All rights reserved.” Groups and service bodies are also required to provide a digital copy of any published translated literature to the WSO. Digital copies can be in PDF or text formats and should include: • the English-language name of the document; • the language of translation; and • the group or service body name and registration number.

Here is a link to the full document:- It is suggested that your translation committee may want to translate these guidelines as well as the licences. Your translation committee will want to be able to read the guidelines and licences in your mother tongue.

(You will need to check with the WSO or your trustee as the planed dates for revision can change)
c) Have you considered where the document lies in terms of
priority for translation?
d) Is financial assistance available from OA Inc. or R9 budgets?

12. 2) Ensure accurate translation of original text – i) Trust (Concept 3)
ii) Nothing left out.
iii) Nothing added.
iv) Same meaning and implication –
as closely as a different language allows.
Original text has been approved by OA worldwide.
Note - Allowed to alter measurement & weight references (e.g. ounces and pounds to kilos and grams, feet and inches to metres and centimetres etc.)

Complete each one of the two Licences at each stage.
Sign on behalf of your Service Body, to WSO.
OA’s MD will sign for OA & keep a copy on file.
Signed copy of licence will be sent to your SB to keep.

14. 4) The Two Step Licence Process
Legal Agreement
The Licences are formal legal agreements
between your Service Body and OA Inc.
They state what you and OA have agreed.
You have permission to translate / publish OA’s copyrighted literature.
No licence – no permission (for OA Literature).
Remember, for downloadable documents, you do not need a licence but you will need to make sure there is the usual OA citation and copies are sent to WSO.

15. Licence 1 Gives permission to translate & circulate for validation.
Your Service Body has
- 18 months to complete the translation
- and a further 6 months to circulate and
validate.
After completion WSO will send you an electronic / paper copy.

16. Licence 2
Gives permission to print & distribute, including the OA Logo.
Signing Licence 2 means your Service Body agrees to: -
Every copy will have the correct copyright notice.
Every copy will have the exact OA logo.
Send one printed & one electronic copy to WSO.
Send a 10% of Net Sales (Sales less direct costs) to WSO – Royalties (as per the signed licence for translated literature).
Ensure all surplus funds will be used for OA.
Note: - Ensure all drafts are returned and destroyed.

17. 5) Translations Committee
Forms a structure for development of translation in your language.
Service in OA is always best as a group of members ‘Together we can’.
Avoidance of over dependence on individual members.
Establish priorities:-

18. 6) Choosing Translators
OA members understand our literature and want the best for OA.
OA members may start but not finish.
Make sure the translator uses the glossary.
Use a contract right from the beginning if you are employing a translator.

19. 7) Validating (a)
Check for clarity & translators general understanding.
Suggest:-
Use draft in an OA meeting reading a few paragraphs & discuss message.
Small groups / committees meet & review.
Use with sponsees as discussion.

local language for good grammar etc.
Use printed copies where possible for members to write comments on.
Have one collection ‘point’ for sending the reviewed copies to.

Make sure you set the price so that you make a surplus & thus fund the next translation.

23. 9) Royalties & Selling Prices (a)
Set the selling price so as to make a surplus.
Example gross profit 60% of sales and production costs 40%.
Production costs e.g. €1500 & divide by .40 = €3750 sales amount.
Divide that figure by number of items to be printed. Say 500.
€3750 / 500 copies = €7.50 per copy.
That will give your service body enough to cover costs & build up a prudent reserve for more translations.

24. 9) Royalties & Selling Prices (b)
Royalties due to OA, Inc. are 10% of net income from sales on translated OA literature. Consider putting a line item in the budget for this.
Clause 7 of Licence 2 says: - Royalty. For the rights granted by Licensor, Licensee agrees to pay to Licensor a royalty calculated as follows: 10% of Net Income from the sale of licensed OA publication. Royalties shall be due and payable thirty (30) days after the first and each successive anniversary of the Effective Date of this Agreement. Net Income is defined as the excess of the selling price of goods over their direct cost. The remaining Net Income the Licensee derives directly or indirectly from sale, distribution or other disposition of the Final Translation will be used exclusively for the not-for-profit purposes for which the Licensee was organized.

26. At a previous R9 Assembly the OA Representatives compiled a Vision for Translation of OA Literature in R9
The members discussed how R9 members have been working hard in R9 for many years on turning our OA literature & materials that exist in English into translated versions for use in all the other languages where our fellowship exists.
Members looked at the reasons why we need and want the material to be translated.

27. Vision for Translation of OA Literature in R9
The assembly members looked at a summary of our literature - you can see the blue boxes are where the items are translated and published in the first picture on the left. R9 representatives built a vision of what we would like to do and how we can each help towards our long term goal of filling all those squares and turning them blue. Thus achieving full and complete translation of all our OA material & literature into the languages where we have a presence. This is our vision – (see the picture containing all blue boxes within the picture on the right).
