13th Amendment Ratified in December, 1865. Abolished Slavery!

14th Amendment Ratified in July, 1868 Granted Citizenship!

Lets Brainstorm! In your notes write your immediate reactions to this question, and give your reasons: Do you think the Reconstruction Amendments will solve all the problems for former slaves in the South? Why or why not?

Work with students and see why they things would have immediately changed and why not. List reasons on board. Then ask students to put together a thesis with you.

The Reconstruction Amendments failed to give freed slaves in the south immediate help. The Amendments left freedmen still with little access to education, or jobs. As a result, African Americans would be forced to continue to fight for their basic civil rights for decades to come. What kind of research would you need to do to finish this paper?
