DID Definition: • Disruption of identity characterized by two or more distinct personality parts. This disruption may be observed by others, or reported by the patient. • Amnesia between parts of the personality. • The disturbance is not a normal part of broadly accepted cultural, religious practice, or part of the normal fantasy play of children. Intro & Famous Individuals with DID
8:46 Herschel Walker, a Heisman award-winning running back and former NFL player, suffers from dissociative identity disorder. Shirley Mason, better known as Sybil, popularized the disorder in the 70s. Flora Rheta Schreiber's novel Sybil told a fictionalized version of Mason's story. The book stated that Mason had multiple personalities as a result of severe child sexual abuse at the hands of her mother. *We will be watching the movie Sybil in this unit.
