2. TYPES OF PARENTING STYLES AND OUTCOMES
MOST PARENTS CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO FOUR MAIN TYPES OF PARENTS BY THE STYLE IN WHICH THEY GUIDE THEIR CHILDREN. AS WE DISCUSS EACH, THINK ABOUT WHERE YOUR OWN PARENT(S) FITS MOST APPROPRIATELY. DO EACH OF YOUR PARENTS USE THE SAME STYLE?

3. AUTHORITARIAN: LIMITS WITHOUT FREEDOM
PARENTS WORD IS LAW, PARENTS HAVE ABSOLUTE CONTROL.
MISCONDUCT IS PUNISHED.
AFFECTION AND PRAISE ARE RARELY GIVEN.
PARENTS TRY TO CONTROL CHILDREN’S BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES.
PARENTS VALUE UNQUESTIONED OBEDIENCE.
CHILDREN ARE TOLD WHAT TO DO, HOW TO DO IT, WHERE TO DO IT, AND WHEN TO DO IT.

4. Outcomes of Authoritarian Style
Obedient
Distrustful
Discontent
Withdrawn
Unhappy
Hostile
Not High Achievers
Often Rebel
Children from authoritarian homes are so strictly controlled, either by punishment or guilt, that they are often prevented from making a conscious choice about particular behavior because they are overly concerned about what their parents will do.

5. Democratic: Freedom within limits
Middle ground between authoritarian and permissive.
Stress freedom along with rights of others and responsibilities of all.
Parents set limits and enforce rules.
Willing to listen receptively to childs requests and questions.
Both loves and limits.
Children contribute to discussion of issues and make some of their own decisions.
Exert firm control when necessary, but explain reasoning behind it.
Respect childrens interest, opinions, unique personalities.
Loving, consistent, demanding.
Combine control with encouragement.
Reasonable expectations and realistic standards.

6. Outcomes of Democratic Style
Children whose parents expect them to perform well, to fulfill commitments, and to participate actively in family duties, as well as family fun, learn how to formulate goals. They also experience the satisfaction that comes from meeting responsibilities and achieving success.

7. Permissive: Freedom without limits.
Parents allow their children to do their own thing.
Little respect for order and routine.
Parents make few demands on children.
Impatience is hidden.
Discipline is lax
Parents are resources rather than standard makers
Rarely punish
Non controlling, non-demanding
Usually warm
Children walk all over the parents

8. Outcomes of Permissive Parenting
Aggressive
Least self—reliant
Least self-controlled
Least exploratory
Most unhappy
Children from permissive homes receive so little guidance that they often become uncertain and anxious about whether they are doing the right thing.

9. Uninvolved Few demands. Low responsiveness. Very little communication.
Generally detached from child’s life.
Offer little in the way of guidance, structure, rules, or even support.
Extreme cases parents may reject or neglect their child’s needs.
High chance of parental addiction to drugs and alcohol.

10. Outcomes of Uninvolved Parenting
Development of a sense of unimportance to the parent.
Become emotionally withdrawn from social situations.
Develop a sense of loneliness.
Show patterns of truancy in school.
Prone to develop fear, stress, and anxiety disorders.
Develop a low self-esteem.
Lack self-control.
High chance of addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Demonstration of defiance to authority figures.

11. What Does It All Mean?
May have conflicting parenting styles in a household. For example, the mother is democratic and the father is more permissive. Sometimes leads to mixed signals with children. Living in more than one household and having “other” parents. Not necessarily universal. Cultural factors may also play an important role in parenting styles and child outcomes. Essential to learn to cooperate as they combine parenting styles. Most important to be yourself and select the method that you believe in and are comfortable with and be consistent.
