1804: declared himself “Emperor of France”.
Absolute power
The French accepted him. WHY?

Restored economy: control prices, create jobs, build roads/canals.
Set up public school system.
Made peace with the Church.
Made changes that pleased all social classes.

Religious tolerance
End of feudalism

6. II. His Empire
Annexed the Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Italy and Germany.
Overthrew other monarchs and put his own family and friends in power.
Gave France back its pride and glory.
But never able to conquer Britain.
Spread revolutionary ideas all over the world.
