2 I. Napoleon Bonaparte Lieutenant at age 20. Supported the republic.
Victories against Austria & Britain. Developed a network of spies and censored the press to cover up failures.

3 I. Napoleon Bonaparte 1799: Overthrew the weak Directory and set up the Consulate: 3-man governing board. “First Consul” (for life) 1804: declared himself “Emperor of France”. Absolute power The French accepted him. WHY?

4 II. His Reforms Restored economy: control prices, create jobs, build roads/canals. Set up public school system. Made peace with the Church. Made changes that pleased all social classes.

5 A. The Napoleonic Code Equality for all citizens (men)
Religious tolerance End of feudalism

6 II. His Empire Annexed the Netherlands, Belgium, parts of Italy and Germany. Overthrew other monarchs and put his own family and friends in power. Gave France back its pride and glory. But never able to conquer Britain. Spread revolutionary ideas all over the world.
